On this page, I will post goals shared from friends from all over. It is your “publicly communicated commitment” to everyone as to what you plan to achieve in 2010. Specifically, your health or fitness goal.
Send your goal to bikewhisperer1@gmail.com to be added to the list.
I will be checking in on you to see how you’re doing throughout the year!
Set it and get it, and don’t forget it!
The Bike Whisperer (Dallas – Fort Worth): Train for 7 months for a 3,300 mile journey across the U.S.; Successfully take the tour in the fall.
[BW Aug18 Update: I've ridden over 7,000 miles, participated in x organized rides (last one is Hotter'n Hell Hundred coming up), and have reached my first 400-mile week. The tour is around the corner.]
Ronnie B. (Atlanta): My 2010 cycling goals are to be able to finish some Category 3 races this year, not win, but to help out team mates. I would also like to do a few centuries, continue to get more involved in the cycling community and hope to be healthy through cycling!
Kris S. (Dallas – Fort Worth): My Big Goal this year is to run faster than my dad. However, with that said, my dad is also the person who trains with me and as I get faster, so does he. Realistically, my goal is to run a half marathon under two hours. I had a PR run today!! Ran the 3M half marathon in 2:13!! Almost there.
Hagen D. (Dallas – Fort Worth): Train with a power meter this year to become faster and finish the Hotter’N Hell Hundred in less than 4:30.
Angelica C. (Chicago): I want to do my first triathlon this year. At least the Sprint. http://www.chicagotriathlon.com/
Rusty S. (Virginia): I am going to complete the Shenandoah Mountain 100 MTB race gain–this time in under 12 hours.
Kevin V. (Huntington Beach): I am going to lose 20lbs., get back to regular running again (returning from leg/hip injury so I haven’t set specific running goals yet) and ride the Amtrak Century in September (http://www.ocw.org/Amtrak/Default.asp)
Shawn C. (Silicon Valley): I will lose 50 pounds by September (and have lost 13 already!).

[Lois A. May20 update: Finished first sprint triathlon in 1hr 52 minutes…8 minutes under 2-hour goal.]
Margo R. (Ohio): I hope to cycle 3 times a week when the season hits and then work up to 4 times a week, and then ride a metric century and a century by September.
Jennifer L. (Dallas – Fort Worth): I will not gain any weight above current so that I can keep my Weight Watchers Lifetime Membership. This requires going to the gym 2-3 times a week.
[Jennifer L Apr29 update: Keeping to three times a week at gym and Weight Watchers told her she qualified to work at WW since she kept weight off for so long.]
Kathy M. (Cedar Rapids IA): I will complete the Pigman Sprint Triathlon in June with a personal record. I will also ride 2,000 miles this year.
Doug D. (Maryland): My goal this year is to lose 45 pounds, get back on the bike (I’ve had two herniated disk surgeries since I last regularly rode) and get fit to complete a century (The Seagull 100 in October).
[Doug D Feb25 update: Lost 17 pounds so far this year; though I also took a setback as I tweaked by knee and I’ve not been able to get on the bike as I need to. Things are improving so I expect that March will allow me back on the bike.]

Who’s next?

My Big Goal this year is to run faster than my dad. However, with that said, my dad is also the person who trains with me and as I get faster, so does he. Realistically, my goal is to run a half marathon under two hours. I had a PR run today!! Ran the 3M half marathon in 2:13!! Almost there.
I just want to be faster. I can pedal all day long and finish any distance I put my mind to. I just want to be able to do any of this ‘faster’. This year, my coach and I will be trying to achieve better results thru training with a power meter. I’m excited for the level of communication this will open up between my coach and I. Now I am held fully accountable for whatever interval session is required for the day. Every watt counts during every second of every training session. It will also keep me from overtraining. I’m also going to work on getting my century finish time closer to 4 hours. I finished the 2009 HH100 in 4:45. I’d even be happy to bring it below 4:30 or 4:20..
I am going to complete the Shenandoah Mountain 100 MTB Race again this year, this time in 12 hours or less.
My goal is lose weight by september so I am not the fattest dad in my son’s kindergarten class
My personal goal is run a marathon this year. My first was in 2003 and it was the joy of my life a the time. Ideally I’d like to beat my original time but right now completion is the goal.
@mikedmerrill
My fitness goals are as follows: cycle behind Jeff Lipschultz and let him carry me in his draft. No seriously, I hope to cycle 3 times a week when the season hits and then work up to 4 times a week, and then ride a metric century and a century by September.
You twitter pal,
@HRMargo
This is fun to watch! And I have many friends on here who I can hold accountable, too (cough! Kevin, Rusty, Angelica, Lois). In fact, Angelica, I’ll come cheer you on for the Accenture triathlon this summer!
My goal is coming soon…though I think many of you know what it is.
My goals are:
-Complete the Pigman Sprint Triathlon in June with a better time.
-Ride, ride, ride my bike. 2,000 miles this year maybe? If it will ever warm up here in Iowa.
Made plans for my first open-water swimming training session this Sunday…I’ll keep my fellow Bike Whisperer friends posted. How’s everyone else’s training going?
Oh yea, and Gini committed to helping me find the perfect bike for my race when she’s out here in April!
No doubt, Gini will set you up right, Lois. Get ready to roll off some serious miles when she’s around.
I got her used to riding in clips. She’s pretty good at it! My first time I totally bit it twice. She didn’t fall once!
Alright! Here is is…
June 6 Elephant Rock Century (Colorado)
July 31 Santa Cruz Century (California)
August 20 Reach the Beach Century (Oregon)
And September either the Moab (Utah) Century or the Idaho Century.
No Ride the Rockies this year…Coach said I had to ride another 10 hours a week to be ready and, with a new business launching, I can’t make that commitment. But I’m training for next year now so I can make it happen next year!
I don’t have anything to report yet, as my first race isn’t until June 6. BUT Coach has me doing speed drills at the velodrome track every Friday and it’s super fun! I think it’s going to make me a lot stronger for the straight aways.
I did it! I finished my first sprint triathlon in 1hr 52 minutes…8 minutes under my 2-hour goal. I was thrilled. Gini DID take me out mountain biking with clips and taught me the tricks of how to get in and out of them (without falling), so that was a huge help. I rode a Trek 1000 that I borrowed from a friend of my husbands and have since purchased it because I liked it so much!
The whole race was a lot of fun, but the swim was definitely the hardest part. The ocean was choppier than I’d hoped with an undercurrent pulling us North, so it took a lot of effort just to get past the break.
All in all it was a terrific experience and I hope to do another one sometime in the future. Definitely a lot easier on my knee than running, too! Thanks for all the support
Run my first marathon in November. There are longer term things I’d like to do running but this is my #1 priority for 2010.
I set my 2 goals early in the year.
1. Ride across the country on my bicycle and this was completed 8-9-2010.
2. Ride 10,000 miles on my bicycle this year. Year to date 9100 as of 8-18-2010.
